  • Crazy October Market

What is up, down, and sideways with our Stock Markets?  The craziness that is ensuing in the month of October makes me queasy.  Historically Sept. and Oct. are down and depressed months.  Sellers rule.  We have had bad news on the mortgage front.  People are losing their houses and not saving any money.  Companies are writing off loses and somehow China is losing its Golden luster (they just figured out how to mass produce lead painted yellow masquerading as gold).  To me it looks like the sky is falling, but analysts are saying "we already priced that in."

So ... is the bad behind or are we driving off a cliff.  The world markets look solid.  As for me, fear will reign supreme in this one.  The fear of losing everything will drop 1800-2500 points out of this market OR the fear of missing out on a run up to make a buck will drive this higher in the 14,500 - 14,800 region.

My fearful vote says "find a 6% CD and ride the out storm."  There will be better valued deals after chaos.

    BTW - GOOG?

  • Another Smoking Ban

Colorado has upheld a ban on smoking inside ones own home. It seems a homeowner in Boulder Colorado shares a wall with their neighbor, and their neighbor filed an injunction to start this process that has become a downhill slide.

Now, I'm not a fan of cigarette smoke.  GPC should not even be considered tobacco, and I've found that there is an ultra cheap Chinese and Vietnamese cigarette sold in Seattle that's worse than GPC's.  They are not tobacco like a Montecristo cigar or organic Virginia cut burly pipe tobacco.

My fear and loathing lies in the control.  Gays and lesbians have long argued that they should be allowed to do what they want in their own house.  They are adults and can make their own decisions.  Abortion advocates have fought for the right to control their own body.

We'll see where all this legislated morality takes us.

  • Convenience or Sacrifice?

Here is a great technical article on how to build an RFID Keyboard.  The fascinating part of it is the last page.

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2005450,00.asp

The author implants an RFID tag into his hands so he can log on without any passwords or user id's.  I think Mr. Orwell would be proud.  If only Stalin or Mao' could have got their 'hands' on this technology, they could have tracked the defectors so much better.  Maybe we should just tag all "Good Ole' Americans" with RFID and that way we can easily tell who the terrorists, illegal immigrants, homeless, poor, christians, republicans, democrats are.

Ah...the sounds of Utopia buzzing in my head!

  • Privacy (Fear or Greed)?

Here is an article that questions intrusions into privacy and then asks does anyone care.  I find it ironic that this was a "directed link" which was feed to me based on my prior surfing habits.

The real irony is that in the Peoples Republic of Washington, there is a committee that is in place to see if they need to be the chosen few who dictate what the privacy boundaries are.  It's kinda like...

"We are all equal, just some are more equal than others."

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15221095/

The article even alludes to the fact that people are not smart enough to understand privacy and what it is.  That may be true, but do you need to create a committee that controls that?

I'm starting to think a little beach front home in the Philippines with no computers in it might be a good idea.  Then again, this comment will be found in 20 years and label me un american and succeed in getting me fired, kicked out of a companies board, or removed from office.

About Me

  • I'm a random misfiring of matter. I've been a banker, a jr.high teacher, a high school teacher, a technical college teacher. I've worked on Cruise Ships all over the world from Alaska to Aruba and from Morocco to St. Petersburg (Russia that is). I am licenced as a stock broker, mortgage lender, insurance agent, and teacher. But the most random of all is being a Wine Consultant, tasting over $30,000 worth of wine last year! God Save The Burgundy (that's Pinot Noir for those of you still eating Freedom Fries)
